Nearly all the Unix and VMS computers in the lab are connected directly to the Internet. This means that every machine has an Internet Address, or IP number. Every Internet address also has a name associated with it. For example, the internet address of my Indigo2 is 163.1.16.128, its name is weevil.biop.ox.ac.uk. Internet addresses that end in .uk are UK machines, fr French, se Sweden, etc. US computers usually have the ending .gov for Government, .mil for miltary or .edu for education. Companies have the extension .com in the US and .co in the UK and many other countries.
