Guide to the EBI Home Page

This is the primary index for navigating the EBI site.  The index is divided into six sections.  Each section contains a title that links to help on that section and an expanded list of links.  The sections are:

Information General information agout the EBI and its staff.  Links to search engines and other utilites.
Databases The three main biological databases maintained by the EBI as well as other databases hosted or developed at the EBI.
Database Searching General search tools for the databases including searching by sequence similarity and structural similarity for 3D structures.
Analysis Tools A range of tools available at the EBI web site for analysis of biological sequences and structures.
Data Submission Information on how to submit a DNA sequence or macromolecular structure to the databases maintained at the EBI.
Group and Project Pages Information on the work of specific groups and projects at the EBI in the Service, Research and Industry programmes.

Philosophy of the EBI web pages

At the top level, the EBI website is organised as a short hierarchy of index and information pages.  The aim is to allow you to find the principal information and services on the site in at most 3 mouse clicks.  These pages have a consistent look and feel and are maintained primarily by the EBI support team.

The index and information  pages require a browser that supports tables.

Below the index and information pages are pages specific to particular projects and groups.  EBI is a research and development organisation in computing techniques as applied to biology.  As a consequence, some lower level pages will exploit the latest technology and so require the latest hardware and browsers.  Examples are work on CORBA and Java.  Where possible, the specific requirements to use a page will be described on the link to that page.

Experimental and Fully Supported Pages

A new EBI service will often come from the work of a particular group or individual at the EBI.  The group, or individual may make the service available to others in an experimental form.  Support for these services is purely from the group or individual concerned and may or may not continue if the individual leaves the EBI or moves on to other projects.

In contrast, some services of the EBI are EBI supported.  Such services are not dependent upon specific individuals, but are managed through the core EBI services.

Reporting Problems/Comments on the web pages

For general comments on the EBI web pages, for example if you can't find something that should be there,  please mail wwwpages@ebi.ac.uk this will reach a small group at the EBI who are concerned with developing and improving the EBI web pages.  Problems with specific services should be directed to the email address listed at the bottom of the page in question.
