Travel lnformation
(This is incomplete, but something along these lines can be written from the existing travel guides - I think we need a 'walking map' as well as a slightly more high-resolution road map than the one currently on the web pages)

The EBI is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus at Hinxton, Cambridge, UK.  Despite our Cambridge address, we are actually about 9 miles from the centre of Cambridge in new buildings built in the grounds of an old country house, Hinxton Hall.  The campus which is owned by the Wellcome Trust, currently hosts the EBI, The Sanger Centre, and the MRC Human Genome Mapping Resource Centre, as well as conference facilities and accommodation.  Visiting any of these organisations can be difficult due to our beautiful but comparatively isolated location.

By Air

It is best to fly to London Stanstead airport.  Stanstead is about 20 minutes drive from Hinxton.  If you must fly into London Heathrow or Gatwick, then allow at least 2 hours to reach Hinxton by road.  If you want to be met by a car at the airport, then ask your host to arrange it.  The cost is around £20 for Stanstead and £60 for Heathrow and Gatwick.  Alternatively you can use rail or coach links from both airports to get to Cambridge or closer.

By Rail

The main London Liverpool Street Station to Cambrige rail line runs along the bottom of the campus.  Unfortunately, we are about half way between Gt. Chesterford and Whittlesford stations.  Both are small country stations and DO NOT HAVE TAXI RANKS.   If you the weather is nice and you are energetic, then catch a train to Gt Chesterford, or Whittlesford and walk to Hinxton by following the instructions below.  Gt. Chesterford takes about 40 minutes to walk.  Whittlesford a little longer, but there are more trains.  Alternatively, ask someone to meet you at the station with a car, or to arrange a taxi to meet your train.  During weekdays, trains are fast and reasonably frequent - the service is less good on Sundays.  Train times can be obtained with  Railtrack's route planning service.

Walking from Whittlesford Station:  This is about 3 miles.  Leave the station from the exit on the side of the tracks next to the station building.  There is only one road away from the station on this side, so follow this until you reach a junction.  TURN LEFT, after about 50 metres you will come to a staggered junction across a  main road.   Cross the main road and continue on the road opposite.  You will pass a Volvo Truck Depot on your right.  Continue on this road into Duxford Village.  You will pass The John Barleycorn Pub on your right.  Continue until you reach a junction signposted to Hinxton LEFT (1.25 miles). Take this left turn to Hinxton.  After a few hundred metres, the road passes between factory buildings (CIBA), with the CIBA sports and social club on your left.  Follow the road to Hinxton Village.  Before reaching Hinxton, you will cross two railway lines (a goods siding and the London-Cambridge main-line), and a river.  In Hinxton Village, you will come to a T-junction.  TURN RIGHT and walk through the centre of Hinxton.  You will pass the Red Lion Pub on your left, before reaching another T-junction.  The (Back) entrance to the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus is directly opposite you.  Follow the road into the campus.  You will pass between the old Hinxton Hall building on your LEFT and the Conference facilities on your RIGHT.  Directly ahead of you are two modern looking buildings.  The LEFT one is the EBI.

Walking from Gt. Chesterford Station:  This is about 3 miles.

Blah blah blah.

By Road

The only really practical way to reach the campus.  (some details here).
