Postdoctoral Research Assistant

The Postdoctoral Research Assistant will join the bioinformatics research group of
Professor Geoff Barton in the 5* rated School of Life Sciences Research in the College of Life Sciences, University of Dundee. The group has excellent space and computing facilities for
bioinformatics research as well as technical and systems support staff.
Jalview is an interactive, user friendly, Java application for protein and nucleic acid
alignment analysis and visualization (www.jalview.org). It is freely available GPL software deployed as a Java Application on over 15,000 computers worldwide and as an applet on tens of
thousands of web pages. Jalview interacts with SOAP-webservices to provide complex and CPU intensive analyses of sequences with rapid visualization of results. The aim of this position
is to extend the suite of SOAP web services for sequence database searching, alignment, clustering and annotation/analysis. The work will require enhancements to the existing service
architecture and the improvement of client-side visualization facilities.
We seek a candidate with at least one year's experience in the development of large
applications in Java ideally with webservice development. Preference will be given to candidates who also have research experience in the computational analysis of biological sequences.
This position is funded by SFC for 18 months and is available immediately.
